On behalf of the Alumni staff, welcome to your newly redesigned and rebranded Air Force Academy Soccer Alumni (AFASA) association!
Over the past few years you may have noticed a “passing of the torch” with respect to the Alumni staff positions. Our previous staff carried the torch for countless years and did an amazing job for the association. We owe much gratitude to guys like Pat McKenna (’87) and Greg Walsh (’81) for doing all the thankless, behind-the-scenes work that made our alumni association second-to-none. Following the Treasurer’s “change-of-command” last Alumni Weekend, Greg challenged the four of us to take the alumni association to the next level. Well, we embraced that challenge and over the past year we’ve worked hard to carry-on our rich tradition and inject new ideas into the association.
This transformation has been a challenge and is still on-going. We started off with a lot of vigor but not much direction in terms of the ultimate end-state. That said, to better monitor our progress, we established a set of goals that we wanted to accomplish by Alumni Weekend 2015:
- Design an Alumni-Friendly Website
- Rebrand Alumni Newsletter
- Stand Up AFASA Social Media Accounts
- Acquire New AFASA Merchandise
- Achieve 100% Alumni Contact
So, we marched on and began working to accomplished these goals. It wasn’t until we wrote this letter (two weeks before Alumni Weekend) that we realized the need to revisit the purpose for our alumni association. We want to be diligent as we reassess our existing mission and vision before making any modifications. That said, this process will take some time but we will be sure to keep you up-to-date on our progress.
Getting back to the goals listed above, accomplishing the first four goals required the design of a new logo. So, we set out to do just that. It turns out creating a logo isn’t so easy (check out the “Evolution of the Crest” section)! Finally, after several months of iterating, we came up with the new AFASA Crest.
Along with the new crest, we designed a new website to give you a “one-stop-shop” for all things AFASA. We also revamped the Go Birds Newsletter to give it a professional, magazine-like feel. In order to maximize our reach to all alumni and strengthen our network, we stood up specific social media accounts to keep us connected. Finally, we acquired new merchandise with the AFASA Crest proudly displayed on these items; and they are available for purchase year-aroundvia the online store!
This transformation is still a work in progress. We’ve got a lot more to do, but we’re proud of the new features we’re unveiling this alumni weekend and have many more in store. As this is YOUR alumni association, we want your input, so please email us at email@example.com with any suggestions you may have. GO BIRDS!

Behind the design
The vision behind the new AFA Soccer Alumni logo was to create a simple yet elegant design that would adequately represent the rich tradition and pride of our organization. At the heart of our association is the Air Force Academy Men’s Soccer program, for it is the unifying experience we all share. With this crest our goal was to create that tie between the AFA Soccer Program and the AFA Soccer Alumni association.
